Growing up on the California coast in Monterey was magical. Both of my parents were free divers. The intertidal plants and animals were my friends and we played daily.
My whole family would be on the beach most weekends. My mother, father, and Uncles would suit up and head into the Sea to spearfish. My Grandmother in her wetsuit and pitchfork would dig for clams along the break. While us kids would scale the rocks like crabs looking for Limpets, Periwinkles, and Seaweed.
A large bonfire would be built and a big pot of boiling water boiled on the beach. The day’s catch was cleaned and added to the pot.
This love of the Ocean has stayed with me my whole life. Being a child of the Sea, I was taught that the Sea or Seaweed cures most ailments.
I have found this to be very true. I gather Seaweed only from the beach. Gifts of the Sea if you will. Ethical harvesting is the only sustainable way. Too many of our California coastal species have been taken in mass and are having a big effect on the ecosystem.
So far, seven different kinds of Kelps and Seaweeds have been identified. I bring home all summer long and dry for days on racks here on The Butterfly Hill.
Once dried, they are placed into oils and cured for at least two months under the Sun and Moon. This oil is then used to make the Seaweed Salt Scrub and the Liquid Seaweed Bandaid. The bottled Oil has added Seaweed as well.
