Being Portaguese is one of my favorite things in life. We are a gregerious fun loving party people. Food is always the center of every celebration. In my families someone will pick a recipe and cook it for most of our gatherings. Portaguese Beans is one of the dishes that I remember most from being a small child. I was not a good eater and never ate meat, but sometimes the smell of the traditional beans cooking made me crazy. Later in life I found out why, they are delicious!
One side of my family made them in a very tradional manner. My paternal grandmother had a spicy version. My maternal grandmother a sweeter version. It is said that my grandfather didn’t like the spicy, so my Nana altered the recepie to fit his palate. This is the recipe that I have loved most. And I love that she made it special for him.
My sister Kim is the maker of the beans in our generation. She makes them for EVERY special occasion. If she didn’t there would be a revolt. The line at our family buffets starts at the beans. She puts them in a heated crockpot so they are ready to go from appetizers to dessert. And yes, my family will eat them all day. And it’s what we line up for to take togo.
